Bremo Bluff, Virginia
Electric generation
Brandenburg was contracted to dismantle and dispose of electrostatic precipitator units and coal handling equipment as part of the Bremo Bluff Power Station conversion from coal to natural gas. The station, located in Virginia, began operations in 1931 and added additional units in 1950 and 1958. The plant was in full operation during the entire scope of the project, requiring precise timing of events. Environmental decommissioning included the abatement, packaging, handling, staging, loading and disposal of all asbestos- containing materials (ACM) and universal waste. Demolition included the separation of utilities, piping, ductwork, conduit, and other system elements. Overhead conveyor systems and precipitators were rigged, cut, and lowered to a pre-determined ground location in a controlled and safe manner. Heavy equipment was used to prepare the components for recycling. The project also included the selective demolition of various structures and equipment, equipment salvage and site restoration work. The conversion reduced a variety of air pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and mercury. The station now generates enough electricity to power approximately 56,750 homes at a lower and cleaner cost.
