Project Info:

Brandenburg completed the demolition and environmental remediation of the coal handling equipment and related structures for two units at a generating station, located along the Delaware River. The units had been in operation since the 1960s and generated 588 megawatts of power to over half a million homes, until retired in 2012. Brandenburg’s careful planning, sequencing and coordination of events was required, while the six other units remained in operation, during all phases of the project. The decommissioning process began with asbestos and universal waste removal. Equipment was recycled and repurposed. Brandenburg utilized excavators to remove the coal conveyors, crusher, and transfer houses. The 166-foot SO2 scrubber was pulled to the ground and Brandenburg’s excavator equipped with a hydraulic shear was used to dismantle the structure and prepare it for recycling. The soaring smoke stacks, standing 265 feet high were the last structures to be brought down and dismantled. The site was backfilled utilizing the brick, block and concrete generated by the onsite work.
