Electric generation facility
Brandenburg contracted with American Municipal Power for the decommissioning of the Richard H. Gorsuch Generating Station (RHGS), a 1950’s vintage four-boiler/220 megawatts coal-fi red power plant, located near Marietta, Ohio. “Harry Truman was President when this plant first began generating electricity,” AMP President/CEO Marc Gerken said. Brandenburg designed and implemented a project plan for the demolition, asbestos abatement, universal/special waste handling and disposal. Additional work performed included asset recovery; demolition of turbine hall, boiler house and office building; demolition of a 360-foot stack; scrap recycling; foundation removal; intake and discharge tunnel closure; backfill; ash pond closure; final site grading and seeding. Decommissioning started in July 2012 with asbestos abatement, universal/special waste handling and disposal, followed by structure demolition. The job was completed in October 2013. More than 140 employees and over 79,000 man hours were recorded with zero injuries.
