Sunoco, Inc.
Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
Petroleum refinery
In early 2012, Sunoco ceased its refining operations at the massive 780-acre Marcus Hook Industrial Complex. Brandenburg was contracted to demolish the facility in an effort to make way for new process systems and larger storage tanks. Brandenburg verified that all hydrocarbons and petroleum by-products were eliminated from the processing equipment and building structures. Crews performed an extensive chemical sweep of the site to remove universal waste prior to demolition. Asbestos abatement, utility verification and demolition of the process towers, cracker units, reactor tanks, several concrete and brick stacks, and removal of obsolete pipe racks were performed. Structural demolition was performed by mechanical means using large excavators fitted with a variety of attachments including hydraulic shears, hydraulic processors, grapples and other specialty attachments. Brandenburg worked in conjunction with a team of owner representatives to ensure the project was performed safely and efficiently.
